IFA Redfish Tour event pays out more than $65,000

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (May 2, 2017) – Jacob Leininger and Jeff Rogers, both of Slidell, Louisiana, weighed a two-fish limit that totaled 17.67 pounds to win the first event for the Louisiana Division of the IFA Redfish Tour presented by Cabela’s on April 29 at Hopedale, Louisiana. The team won a fully rigged RB190 Ranger boat prize package powered by a 90 horsepower, four-stroke Mercury outboard valued at $26,800 for first place.

The winning anglers faced tough conditions with high winds on Saturday. The team fished ponds with spoons and Berkley Gulp! in the Delacroix area. The anglers took advantage of the Anglers Advantage contingency program and added $3,576 in cash for a total of $33,952 in winnings.

“We grinded all day but had a great time,” Leininger said.

Randy Lane, of Ocklawaha, Florida, and Ryan Lane, of Inverness, Florida, came in a close second with 17.49 pounds. The father-and-son team has made the trip from Florida three times before and enjoys the competition offered by the IFA along with the high quality fishing of Louisiana.

“I have a ball in Louisiana,” said Ryan Lane. “If you catch five fish in Florida, you’ve had a good day. In Louisiana, you can catch 40 to 50 fish a day.”

Although the high winds didn’t discourage the anglers from making a long run, they did however find some productive local spots near the launch.

“In the morning it was pretty rough,” said Ryan Lane. “By noon, the sun came out and we could see well. It was still windy and the boat was blowing all over the place. You got to work with the wind and it’s not too bad.”

The team fished a few ponds and a broken marsh with spoons and Berkley Gulp! jigs.

“I probably caught a redfish on every color of Gulp! you could find,” said Ryan Lane. “The redfish can see the silver spoons at lot further than they can the regular soft plastics.

The anglers caught between 30 and 40 redfish throughout the day and were happy with their results.

“I was stoked,” said Ryan Lane. “That’s the best I have done in the IFA. Everybody there knows what they are doing. Second place is not bad out of 112 boats.”

The anglers won a total of $6,046, including the $100 PENN Reels award and $500 Berkley Big Fish award along with $250 gift card courtesy of Berkley for catching their 9.21-pound redfish on Berkley Gulp!

Barbara Scopelitis, of Corpus Christi, and Starr Boykin, of Dauphin Island, Alabama, brought 17.39 to the scales to win $3,629. The duo drift-fished with Berkley Gulp! on ponds 20 miles from the launch.

The next stop for the IFA Redfish Tour is June 9-10 for the first of two IFA Redfish Open events at St. Bernard Parrish, Louisiana. Teams that compete in at least two regular-season events will be qualified for the 2017 IFA Redfish Tour Championship.

IFA events are made possible through the sponsorship and continued support of these well-respected brands: Hobie Fishing, Ranger Boats, Cabela’s, Lucas Oil, Mercury Marine, RAM, Berkley Gulp!, Berkley Gulp!
