Team O’Riley/Survant Wins IFA Redfish Tour Event
at Port Aransas, Texas
IFA Redfish Tour event pays out more than $48,000
NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (April 5, 2017) – Russell O’Riley, of Portland, Texas, and Corey Survant, of Corpus Christi, Texas, weighed a two-fish limit that totaled 17.60 pounds to win the first event for the Texas Division of the IFA Redfish Tour presented by Cabela’s on April 1 at Port Aransas, Texas. The team won a fully rigged RB190 Ranger boat prize package powered by a 90 horsepower, 4-stroke Mercury outboard valued at $26,800 for first place.

Although O’Riley and Survant have fished the IFA Redfish Tour for years, the Port Aransas event is the first together as a team. With strong winds and overcast skies forecasted for tournament day, the anglers elected to fish a spot they knew would hold fish and stay relatively clean.
“We knew the sight-fishermen would struggle so we made long drifts in an area that we knew was holding fish and where the water usually holds up well,” said O’Riley. “It was local knowledge this time. Knowing where the water is going to stay clean and knowing what the fish were going to do. We didn’t even try to sight-fish that day.”
The anglers stayed close to Corpus Christi and exclusively threw weedless spoons to potholes on a depth change line.
“We kind of zeroed in on an area where the big bites were coming from and narrowed our drift down to that little area,” said O’Riley. “We had one good fish early with the other coming around 10 a.m.”
With 17-plus pounds, the anglers weren’t sure their fish would be enough to win.
“This is the Laguna Madre, a lead is never safe,” said O’Riley. “I’ve seen some big bags come from there so you never know. You are never comfortable.”
With the win, the anglers will fish the next IFA Redfish Texas Division event set for Aug. 12 at Orange, Texas and plan to fish the IFA Championship in Louisiana.
“The IFA is great,” said O’Riley. “The entry fees make it easy to get in and gives an avenue for people to go in and fish against the best of the best and see where you stand without breaking the bank. I like the format and the people.”
Along with the new Ranger boat, the team added $2,764 in Anglers Advantage cash and won the $500 Berkley Gulp! Big Fish Award for their 9.24-pound redfish.
Second-place finishers Judd Johnson, of Cypress, Texas, and Edward James, of Spring, Texas, weighed 16.87 pounds to win $3,125 along with an additional $1,378 in Anglers Advantage Cash. The team fished grass flats with spoons to catch their limit.
Leslie Littles Jr. and Demetric Wells, both of Victoria, Texas, took third place with 15.80 pounds. Although the wind blew hard on competition day, the anglers chose a protected spot in the Seadrift area. The anglers drifted over grass and sand pockets fishing with Berkley Gulp! and spoons. The anglers won a total of $3,362 for their day on the water.
The next stop for the IFA Redfish Tour is April 8 at Beaufort, South Carolina. Teams that compete in at least two regular-season events will be qualified for the 2017 IFA Redfish Tour Championship.
